Transforming Oulu’s old prison area into an urban residential area (Group Work)
As part of the Oulu prison redevelopment project, I and my fellow group members proposed a site design which focuses on the interaction between the existing buildings and the newly developed housing solutions.
To achieve this, we started with a building layout which is orientated along the existing buildings while sticking to a base grid to make use of modular construction methods such as CLT Modules. Furthermore, we also inherited the basic building shapes, sizes and materials from the existing buildings.
To create a lively atmosphere the site contains interwoven pathways along some specific viewing axis for the residents and the public. We also included some communal and commercial spaces on the ground floor level which makes interaction between residents possible.
Lastly, we also wanted to keep some of the history of the site present, specifically represented through the old prison wall and so we decided to partially keep it in its original location, but it now acts as a communal art wall
which can be used creatively by the public
